Hubei Province Container Management Programme in China

Training over 2,000 farmers, extension service workers and retailers on container management.

In Hubei Province, China, a pilot programme focussing on container management was developed. This project was run by the National Agro-tech Extension & Service Centre (NATESC); several provincial Chinese government departments; six members of CropLife China (Bayer, BASF, DuPont, Dow, FMC, Syngenta); Hunan Agriculture University; and three sprayer companies: Huasheng, Sanhe Yongjia, Beijing Fengmao.

A large number of people were trained, including 32 master trainers and over 2,000 farmers, extension service workers and retailers. Materials were also handed out Ð for example, in one of the county projects, the WHO and the Huilongguan Hospital gave 10,300 storage boxes to each household.

The project gained high levels of awareness, with the Prime Minister Wen Jiabao visiting. The spray team saw an improvement in their capability that led to a higher income for farmers. There were also a number of pieces of coverage in the media, as well as in industry journals and within the trade press.

CropLife China also gave a presentation at the China Association of Pesticide Development and Application (CAPDA).

After the programme, rice farmers reported higher levels of satisfaction with their crop protection services than previously.
