Ole Christiansen

What inspires farmers and why is their job so important? Ole Christiansen explains:

Why did you want to be a farmer?

I think it is rewarding to invest time in caring for crops and seeing them grow.

What crops do you grow?

Spinach, wheat, barley, and oats.

What impact do pests and disease have on your crops? Can you give an example in the past where pest and diseases have attacked your crop and describe the damage it caused?

The biggest problem in our country is access to efficacious herbicides in small crops like spinach.  Last year my yield decreased 3% because of weeds.

In general, how important is it to have access to crop protection products?

Very important, otherwise my yields may drop 50-60 %.

Why is your profession important in the challenge to feed the world?

Everyone needs healthy food; therefore, I grow healthy crops. So, other farmers around the world can use our seeds.

What inspires you about your job?

The freedom to manage my day, to work outside in the summertime and to be a steward of the environment.
