What inspires farmers and why is their job so important? Chris Pawelski explains:

Why did you want to be a farmer?

I am a 5th generation farmer, I grew up on the farm and have been working on it since the age of five. I love my job!

What crops do you grow?

What impact do pests and disease have on your crops?

Huge impact, take your pick. Weeds, maggots, smut virus and thrips have all had an impact.

In general, how important is it to have access to crop protection products?

Incredibly important. Without effective crop protection measures you cannot obtain profitable yields.

Why is your profession important in the challenge to feed the world?

It is vital. You cannot feed a 21st century world population of 7 billion or more people using 19th century production practices. Community supported agriculture, community gardens, urban farming, are great initiatives and they engage the public on food production but these small operations cannot produce enough food to feed the world.

What inspires you about your job?

I love the work, I love being outdoors, I love the daily and seasonal challenges.
