International Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in cooperation with the plant science industry and other international organizations, developed the voluntary International Code of Conduct to provide standards for pesticide activities. The first edition was published in 1985, with the most recent update released in June 2013. CropLife International has been closely involved in the development of the Code and, along with its members, has committed to abide by its provisions. Adherence to the Code helps support the human right to safe and affordable food, and to a clean healthy environment and safe working conditions.

In June 2023, CropLife International published a Guide for Industry on the Implementation of the International Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management. This comprehensive resource highlights the particular responsibilities for the pesticide industry under the Code of Conduct and presents current activities undertaken by the industry in support of the Code.

The second part of the booklet summarizes the available guidance for those involved in specific activities in the production, marketing, development, and registration of crop protection products. Appendices provide relevant international instruments that support the Code, FAO/WHO guidelines that underlie the code, as well as guidelines and materials produced by CropLife International in accordance with our stewardship arc.

Additionally, CropLife International developed an e-learning tool as a further resource for the industry. So far more than 10,000 people have used the online tool to increase their knowledge. In addition to use by the crop protection industry, the tool has been referenced positively by core stakeholders including the FAO/WHO Joint Meeting on Pesticide Management.
