Transit and Contained Use

Article 6 of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety addresses transit and contained use of living modified organisms (LMOs), noting that the provisions of the Protocol with respect to the advance informed agreement procedure do not apply to LMOs in transit (paragraph 1) or destined for contained use (paragraph 2).  At their eighth meeting (COP/MOP-8), Parties will consider the status of implementation of these provisions based on information gathered in the Parties third national reports, information posted by Parties on the Biosafety Clearing-House, and a synthesis of views on information, tools, practical experience and guidance related to existing mechanisms and requirements relating to the contained use of LMOs submitted following COP/MOP-7.  The Global Industry Coalition’s views on this issue at COP/MOP-8 can be found here.
